If you follow me on IG you know I am a huge lover of closed storage. Kids toys, arts and crafts & household items don’t need to be visible. Closed storage gives a visual calmness to your space. For our office/ playroom we created a built-in to house all the toys and books.

We used 3 two-drawer base cabinets for the bottom, a butcher block countertop for the counter and shelves & stacked two upper cabinets to the ceiling on each side for the top. Using kick-board pieces from the same cabinet maker and trim to match the room, we created a soffit on top to house some sconce lighting. The tricky part was making sure the lighting was the perfect size to fit the space. It couldn’t have a large faceplate or drop down too low to hit the cabinet doors and prevent them from opening.

All of the products we used are linked.

DIY Rainbow Shelves

These unfinished shelves were perfect for a wall display for my unicorn and rainbow loving 6-year-old. I used craft paint in pastel colors and painted each shelf with two coats of paint. You could use a sealant as a topcoat if you are putting plants or anything on them that may stain or soak into the wood. Since we were just displaying books and toys, we did not put a top coat. Make sure that you space the shelves out according to what you are displaying. For our purposes we used a larger picture book as a guide to make sure it would fit on the shelves
