When we built our house we decided to leave the basement unfinished as our budget was pretty tapped out from the build. We had completed a basement remodel at our old house so we were confident in our DIY skills to make the basement of our dreams a reality. We decided to tackle the smallest yet most complicated space first, the bathroom.

Sleek and minimalistic designs are key to achieving a modern look. Opt for clean lines and simple shapes. Don't forget about lighting! Proper lighting can make all the difference in a modern bathroom. Choose fixtures that complement your color scheme and add to the overall ambiance of the space.

Since our basements have always been a kids entertaining space, I wanted the basement to have a different vibe from the rest of the house. My kids are older now so I wanted the space to fit them now as teens and grow with them as young adults. After seeing the matte black subway like tile in a friend’s bathroom I knew that had the moody vibe I wanted for the space. I needed something to offset all of the black and once I saw the wood ribbon tile I knew that would be the perfect earthy compliment.

Partnering with Signature Hardware on this project was a dream. I reached out to them expressing my love for their Carraway Skirted Toilet and we decided to collaborate together on the guest bathroom project. The Signature Hardware Robertson Console Vanity in Glossy Black was the perfect addition to the space with the Lentz Shower system, faucet and bathroom accessories in Brushed Gold to pop against the dark tile.

Now DIY ing a bathroom is no easy feat, even if you have done it before, there are always hiccups and we hit a few along the way. It turns out DIY ing a space with you as the designer and your husband as the contractor can really help you identify your strengths and weaknesses in your communication skills as a couple. I learned that I need to focus more on the details during the construction phase and keep asking what’s up next so I have both a plan and materials prepared. I think my husband learned that no question is too small to ask and even something as small as a drain size and placement probably requires a 30 minute discussion as I weigh the options. I also picked up a few new skills such as laying and grouting tile but also realized I don’t want to be near any kind of rotating blade so I leave the cutting to him.

Don’t forget to style your bathroom with finishing touches that will make your guests feel at home such as plush towels, cotton rounds, tissues and fresh smelling soaps. We even added some shower steamers for a spa like feel.

Overall, I love how the space came out. I think this bathroom is one that can welcome guests of all ages as they enjoy a night of hanging with a game of pool or a weekend stay with the family.
