How to Organize & Prep Your House for the Holidays

We all know how hectic life can get around the holidays. It seems like we are pushed into Christmas mode before the Trick-or-Treaters have even arrived.

Once the dust has settled from Halloween, I like to take a little break to organize and prep my spaces before Decking the Halls. When I head into the holidays with overflowing cabinets and toy bins it makes me anxious. I think a little prep goes a long way.

Now is the perfect time to straighten out the cabinets under the sink, prep that storage closet that you may want to store gifts in and clean out toy bins before you are completely overwhelmed in January.

This allows me to take inventory of what we already have in our house, and what we have space to accommodate. When the kids were little I lived by “go big or go home,” when it came to Christmas toys, but then when the 6 ft tall dollhouse dictated the layout of the girls bedroom I had to re-evaluate that mantra. Now I try to lead with more experiences and find toys that are a “just right,” fit.

This year our DIY Built-In will be cleaned out and prepped for the incoming Christmas chaos. I will do my best to be mindful when buying gifts to make sure we have space to store them. Check out the DIY Built-In project to see how it was done.

If you don’t have the space for a big built-in, here are some of my favorite closed storage finds that are perfect for holding all of your arts and crafts and toys.

When it comes to the chaos of the holidays, a little planning can go a long way. Taking a week to de-clutter and get in the right mindset will help you take on the New Year with a clear head and an organized space.
