Building a House…the timeline

A work in progress…

Building a house is not for the faint of heart. It’s an emotional process. Trust me, you will feel all the emotions at some point: joy, frustration, excitement & even anger. The key to it all is to try and keep it in perspective. Rome wasn’t built in a day.

The timeline usually goes something like this:

Sloooow, fast, fast, fast, crawl & slow. Think of building a house like birthing a baby, because it is like that in so many ways. The build of excitement and the anticipation of that first 12 weeks. You are excited to grow that little bump and tell everyone but 12 weeks has never felt that long before. The planning, permits, surveys, breaking ground and then pouring footers can be a long process. Then framing comes along and wow it seems to go up fast. You think in your head “9 months, no way, this will be done sooner, look how fast they are going.” Well every experienced builder or anyone who has ever built will be laughing on the inside.

The excitement as drywall is up and you can see your interior take shape. The joy of seeing all of your beautiful selections being installed: light fixtures, cabinets, flooring & countertops. But what they say is true, the devil is in the details. The painting, trim work & moldings are all finishing touches that take time and patience. Some days there will be 4 sets of crews at the house and other days it will look like a ghost town and you will be wondering where everyone is. As with pregnancy, everyone agrees the last month is downright painful. Don’t let the stress of packing and moving allow you to lose sight of the finish line. Your baby is almost ready.

It is true what they say, good things take time. Try and enjoy the process. Don’t let the small mistakes or delays get to you. It’s the process. Trust me when I tell you, the end game is all worth it when you see your family enjoying the house you waited so long for.
