Planning Your Perfect Kitchen Design
When building our house I was almost obsessive in searching for the perfect kitchen design. What is most important to know about kitchen design is that what is perfect for me, isn’t perfect for you. That is why it’s really important to take inventory of how your family uses your kitchen. Are you a grab and go type of family or always entertaining family? What types of meals to you like to cook? What appliances do you use most? If you are a master at the air fryer and toaster, you probably don’t need double ovens. If you never bake, the perfect mixer lift or cookie sheet organizer won’t matter to you. Can you see where I am going with this?
Once you identify your habits, it’s also important to look at your food, place setting and gadget inventory. What do you need to store and how frequently do you need to access it. Do you have a ton of spices and sauces that you need easy access too while at the stovetop? Do you need access to the waffle iron and ice cream maker for weekend treats? Do you host Sunday dinners and need serving platters for 12 readily accessible?
Once you have your habit lists, it’s time to take a deep dive to Pinterest. Search “Baking sheet storage,” or “Cabinet storage for spices,” and take a look at both high end and low end options. A great cabinet maker will also give you honest feedback on where to spend your money. You probably could DIY a baking sheet rack organizer and find a great utensil insert aftermarket. A better investment may be spent on more drawer stacks and cabinets under your island for extra storage.
When you meet with your cabinet maker it is really important to have an idea on what you need storage for. They can masterfully plan a gorgeous kitchen, but if it doesn’t have the right storage for your needs, you will be disappointed.
A few tips and tricks I’ve learned along the way.
-Large drawers are perfect for storing pots & pans, everyday dishes and utensils.
-A small stack of drawers is perfect for pot holders and dish towels.
-Cabinets to the ceiling or under the island are perfect for storing China, ice cream makers and other occasional kitchen items.
-What works for you doesn’t work for everyone, only you know your family’s habits.
